I’ve heard of “Model Based Definition” (MBD), but what is it?  More and more companies today are adopting a Model Based Definition (MBD) strategy to streamline their processes and help them to be more competitive. MBD is the practice of producing a complete digital definition of a product within a 3D model. MBD focuses on ensuring that a 3D model contains all of the information needed to define the product in an annotated and organized manner, thus replacing a traditional drawing. In its’ basic form it contains geometry, Product and Manufacturing Information (PMI) and metadata. Product and Manufacturing Information (PMI) contributes to MBD by conveying information such as GD&T, 3D annotation, surface finish and material specifications. Annotated 3D models are easier to visualize and understand than 2D drawings. They remove the cost and effort of manually producing drawings and provide dynamic interrogation for collaboration across the enterprise.  Companies that rely on 3D annotation have fewer change orders and less scrap. Watch this brief 3-minute video explaining Model Based Definition.
